For each cell type, the linear relationship between cell number and signal produced is established, thus allowing quantification of changes in the rate of cell proliferation. The assays are commonly used to understand how drug dose levels affect cells over time, typically by creating cell growth curves to determine the inhibitory concentration at half maximum effect (IC 50).
